A Brief History
This building was originally built as a retail space.
The front part of the building is two stories and approximately 1000 sq ft.
A single story addition was made to the building at some point.
This addition has a basement with a dirt floor.
The building was a TV Sales & Repair store in the 1950s.
Several old TVs were found in the basement when the building changed hands around 2016.
Later the building was turned into a Laundomat.
The second floor appears to have had a two room office at the front,
accessible via stairs from the west front of the building façade,
and an apartment in the back of the second floor.
At the top of the stairs, there is one door that goes into the two room office,
and another door that goes straight into the back apartment area.
There is evidence that the stairs were originally on the west wall in
the middle of the building but were moved to the front so the second floor could be
accessed separately.
When the building was purchased in 2016, there was what appeared
to be a hatch in the floor of the first floor back room. What was thought to be just a crawl
space appeared to be full of trash.
When we started removing the trash, we discovered that there was
a full basement under the back part of the building, that had been filled with trash over the
years!
Current Use
BCAP and the local churches decided to sponsor a Food Pantry for Benton County
disadvantaged county citizens, which moved into the east wing on March 1st 2016.
To prepare the space, the plaster walls were repaired and painted the original colors.
The floor was cleaned and scrubbed to maintain the existing patina.
The 'toilet room' was rebuilt using period looking fixtures and hexagon black and white tiles.
A wall was built across the stairs to the basement and a door will eventually be added.
A new 40 circuit Load Center was installed at the top of the stairs and new circuits
were routed to the Load Center. A conduit from the Load Center was run in the basement
to the back wall in preparation for switching to a new planned dedicated meter for the
east wing.
